Welcome Spring!!!

Today is a beautiful first day of spring-- sunny & warm with a few clouds to keep it from getting too hot in the garden. Me & the kiddos got a lot of work done today-- cleaned up the raspberry bed & tied the canes in bunches (you can see them behind girlie in this pic), cleaned up & planted a 4"x6" bed with Green Arrow & Oregon Sugar Pod peas, and cleaned up and planted a 4" x 12" bed with 24 Yellow Finn & 24 Red Kennebec potatoes! We didn't get to the onion sets & I didn't get to amend the potato bed with compost, but considering we were up there for about 2 1/2 hours with no meltdowns or whining, I would say we did really well. I'll side dress the potatoes as they grow & that should do the trick.

Anyway, my mud loving little girl is knocked the heck out on the couch right now after such an adventure! And, yes, those are the boy's Lego Star Wars pajamas. Heh. He said he didn't want to come outside when the girlie & I headed up there, but the next thing I knew, there he was in his pajamas & rubber boots, digging for worms & jabbering about finding treasures in the soil!

I had the man rig up a supplemental light in the greenhouse for my tomato starts, and they're working on their first & second set of leaves now... except for the ones that didn't come up at all! So far I'm really disappointed with the Oregon Spring seeds-- one mutant sprout and one dud. *shrug* Saucey was the first to germinate, but only half of them did so. This is the first year I've grown my own tomatoes from seed, and I can see why people always end up with too many starts. Germination is not a reliable phenomenon with tomatoes, it seems, and one could easily plant twice as much as needed just to make sure there's enough in the end. I think we'll be alright, but even if I have to buy a few plants form the store, it's no tragedy.

The lettuce & salad greens I planted in the greenhouse bed is up & looking happy, too. I'm not sure what all else to plant in there. It'll be hot as Hades in there in no time. Peppers maybe? Sherril... do you still have that packet of Early Jalepenos I had you start for me last year? :)

Happy gardening, my friends!
